Mammals of Africa ... Introduction ... What are mammals?
This plains zebra is a mammal. Mammals are animals with a backbone. Mammals are warm blooded, with a body temperature that stays constant most of the time. The babies of mammals are usually born alive, and they take milk from their mothers.

Most mammals have skin thickly covered with hair, to help them keep their temperature constant. Sometimes however the hair covering is very sparse – for example in elephants, pigs or human beings. Mammals may be huge like the elephant, or tiny, like shrews and mice.

The African continent is home to a wide variety of mammal species, and apart from a few specialized groups, representatives of most mammal orders are found in Africa.
